The Cannes Film Festival has been in the media recently for reasons that do not exactly shine a flattering light on the festival or its coordinators. Many women at the film festival in May were been turned away from the red carpet, for reasons that have many people speaking out in protest. The reason these women were being denied entry is because they were not wearing high heeled shoes! There were few accounts of leniency, despite many legitimate reasons that a woman might have opted for more comfortable flat shoes, rather than toe-squishing heels.
The festival director defended this dress code, explaining that he wants the festival to remain classy and elegant. There wasn't much recognition for the women that may have be too elderly, or had medical reasons why high heels wouldn't be worn. Not to mention the women that maybe just didn't feel like wearing heels for six hours, and perhaps opted for a more comfortable style!
We want to know what you think! Do you believe that flats can be just as elegant, beautiful, and chic as high heels? And, most importantly, do you think the woman walking the Cannes Film Festival red carpet should have a choice on the height of shoe they wear? We have brides coming into our wedding dress store daily, and many of them are opting for more comfortable footwear choices when it comes to their big day. We think flats can be just as beautiful as high heels at a wedding, so does the same go for a film festival?
